The E True Hollywood Story Behind Miss Daphne
Miss Daphne created Thick & Lovin It!™ to inspire love from within & maximize self-worth as the foundation for true bliss in all 7 Slices of Life™, one jean size at a time
Miss Daphne was born weighing approximately 10 pounds and raised in GA where she struggled with weight her entire life. By the time she reached age 6, she was 20 pounds overweight. Her parents placed her on a strict Weight Watchers diet which became the starting point of her private battle with dieting and unhealthy relationship with food. At the age of 14 when her parents divorced, Miss Daphne gained a total of 100 pounds and started high school tipping the scale at 230 pounds.
The weight continued to creep up during her tumultuous years in high school. By college, Miss Daphne tipped the scales at 320 pounds. She also suffered from two slipped discs due to a back injury in 1991. At age 22, two doctors told her that she would not live to see the age of 25 due to her health ailments from being morbidly obese. That same year, both her father and stepmother were killed in a tragic car accident while her 3 baby siblings were in the backseat. As a result of dealing with their simultaneous deaths and custody drama over her younger siblings, Miss Daphne buried herself into an abyss of emotional eating and depression.
Three years later, Miss Daphne got married and weighed 330 pounds on her wedding day. The marriage ended less than two years later. She underwent a number of health setbacks including the back injury that would leave her bedridden for days at a time. Miss Daphne pursued and graduated at the top of her class with her MBA but could not land a decent job due to weight discrimination she experienced from prospective employers. She felt like a prisoner trapped inside her own body and hated the constant stares and snickering. She would always tell herself, “When I’m skinny, I’ll finally be happy.”
Miss Daphne made every effort during this time to lose weight with diet after diet, workout after workout, and gimmick after gimmick. Nothing worked. After following a strict regimen of diet and exercise for 9 months which resulted in a measly 7-pound weight loss, Miss Daphne knew something drastic had to happen or she was going to die. She developed sleep apnea and would stop breathing for several minutes many times during the night.
In July 2000, she saw a news report about gastric bypass surgery and decided to research everything she could find out about the procedure. Miss Daphne made the difficult and heart-wrenching decision to undergo the surgery, much to the disapproval of her family and friends. She tipped the scales at 390 pounds. Miss Daphne’s mother, a registered nurse, was against the surgery and immediately exclaimed, “You’ll die on the operating table!” Miss Daphne sadly looked at her with tears and despair in her eyes and calmly replied, “Mom, I’m half dead already.” That jolted her mother and was the turning point where she became Miss Daphne’s #1 supporter.
On September 12, 2000, Miss Daphne stepped out on faith to undergo the gastric bypass surgery. Miss Daphne weighed 394 pounds the morning of the procedure and was wearing a snug-fitting “Big & Tall” man’s jeans with a size 60 waist. She woke up the morning of her surgery finally at peace because she knew there was going to be one of two outcomes:
1) Either she was going to die on the operating table and finally be at peace and out of her misery; OR
2) She would survive the surgery and lose the weight against all odds.
God blessed her with the latter.
Miss Daphne lost a total of 230 pounds in 18 months and has maintained her weight loss for over 8 years through exercise and redefining her relationship with food without dieting. As a result of losing over 200 pounds, she has undergone several painful reconstructive surgeries to remove over 30 pounds of excess skin from her body.
Miss Daphne has been at an all-time high of size 38 and all-time low of size 6 and was miserable at both sizes battling weight, dating, and relationship drama. She has seen both sides of the coin from a morbidly obese standpoint where she was often ridiculed and demeaned to the polar opposite side where she was a “normal” size 6 woman and people treated her differently because of her appearance even though she was not physically healthy. Miss Daphne learned that her happiness was not dependent upon her weight but her mentality and self-love. Now at a healthy size 12-14, Miss Daphne has finally found love within herself, faith in her spirituality and is comfortable in her own skin.

Miss Daphne still celebrates her 25th birthday every year. She figured if those two doctors could impose a premature death sentence on her at age 22, then she had the right to simply stop the clock at age 25 as her own stay of execution. She has stopped the clock for 12 years now and counting. ;-)
